Tabloy vs Beekeeper Studio

We like Beekeeper — we just wanted to go further

Beekeeper Studio is proof that one developer with taste can build something better than a team of fifty without it. The Community Edition is open source, the UI is clean, and it doesn't try to do everything — it does SQL databases well and stays out of your way. We genuinely like it. The reason we built Tabloy isn't that Beekeeper is bad. It's that we wanted MongoDB, Redis, charts, AI assistance, and native performance — and we couldn't get all of that in one tool.

What Beekeeper Studio does well

Open source and community-driven

The Community Edition is GPLv3. You can audit the code, contribute, and know exactly what's running on your machine. That transparency builds trust in a way that closed-source tools can't.

Clean without trying too hard

A lot of "modern" tools overdesign. Beekeeper keeps it simple — the right amount of UI, nothing extra. It's one of the best-looking database clients out there.

Why we built Tabloy differently

Rust, not Electron

Beekeeper is built with Electron (Vue.js). It's one of the lighter Electron apps, but it's still Electron — 300–400MB of RAM for the runtime alone. Tabloy is built with Rust and Tauri, which means roughly half the memory usage and noticeably snappier interactions.

MongoDB, Redis, and ClickHouse

Beekeeper focuses on SQL databases. If you need MongoDB document browsing, Redis key management, or ClickHouse analytics queries, you need additional tools. Tabloy handles them all natively.

AI and visualization

Describe a query in plain English and Tabloy writes it. Select some results and turn them into a chart. These aren't revolutionary features — but they save real time, and Beekeeper doesn't have them.

The bottom line

If open source is non-negotiable for you, Beekeeper CE is one of the best options available. If you're willing to use a closed-source tool in exchange for MongoDB, Redis, native speed, and AI — Tabloy packs more into one app.
